Electric Farming in Action

This summer, Sustainable Northwest’s E-Farms program hit the road, hosting electric equipment demonstrations at farms and agricultural events across Oregon. From the Willamette Valley to the high desert of Central Oregon, farmers got the chance to see electric tractors, utility vehicles, and specialty equipment in action on real working farms. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many participants expressing surprise at the performance, reliability, and simplicity of the electric machines.

At a demonstration in the Rogue Valley, a vineyard operator tested an electric compact tractor on steep hillside rows and reported that the low center of gravity and instant torque made it feel more stable and responsive than the diesel tractor she normally uses. In Central Oregon, a hay producer tried an electric utility vehicle for hauling feed and checking irrigation, and noted that the quiet operation was a noticeable improvement when working around livestock. At every stop, the most common question was the same: how long does the battery last? For most compact and mid-size equipment, the answer is a full workday on a single charge, which surprised many attendees who expected shorter run times.

Sustainable Northwest’s E-Farms team used each demonstration as an opportunity to walk farmers through the economics of electric equipment ownership, including purchase price, operating costs, available incentives, and expected payback periods. For many small and mid-size farms, the total cost of ownership over five years is lower for electric equipment than for comparable diesel machines, even before accounting for incentive programs.

The demonstrations also served as informal networking events, bringing together farmers who are already using electric equipment with those who are still evaluating it. These peer-to-peer conversations are some of the most effective tools for accelerating adoption, because farmers trust the firsthand experience of other farmers more than any brochure or sales pitch.

Sustainable Northwest will continue hosting E-Farms demonstrations throughout the fall and winter, with events planned in the Columbia Basin, the coast, and southern Oregon. Visit our events page for dates and locations.
